Puerto Eten fisherman's association president Fernando Niquen says his group found about 1,200 dead pelicans Thursday and Friday along a 105-mile (170-kilometer) stretch of coastline.
The government's Institute of the Sea says it found nearly 600 dead birds, mostly pelicans but also gannets, along a 43-mile (70-kilometer) stretch.
Its regional chief, Edward Barriga, recalled a mass die-off of pelicans and cormorants in the same area in 1997 due to the absence of anchovies blamed on the El Nino meteorological phenomenon.
Coast Guard official Cesar Villanueva in Lambayeque said Sunday he has never seen so many dying pelicans on the beach in 25 years on the job.

Hey all. Not sure which sub-forum in which to post such updates, but I wanted to let you know how things went.

My talk a couple days ago at Auburn University (4-26-12) went well. It was for their statewide "Alabama Science in Motion" program (an amazing model!) in conjunction with a "Global Climate Change Education" program funded by a grant from NASA. All teachers, who go back to their districts and train other teachers.

Had a bit of a shock when I got there, though. Turns out I'd totally misunderstood my audience. From our month-long interaction on Facebook last November (as part of the program), it was clear the teachers were concerned about climate change and wanted activities and strategies to help their students understand the threat themselves.

But when I go to Auburn and talked with the professionals who run the programs (profs and researchers), I was told that a big chunk of the teachers there--perhaps the majority--were skeptical of climate change!!

Bit of a gobsmacker, that. But then, as one of my hosts put it when I expressed such dismay, "this is Alabama." Another said that in Alabama, the skepticism about climate change is right up there with that about evolution. What a sad, sad, sad, statement about the state of things in our modern society.

So I had to re-do my presentation in the few hours I had before I presented. As a result (and because freaking Powerpoint tricked me into thinking I was deleting empty text boxes when I was actually deleting entire pages!) I arrived late for my own presentation and had to cut it short.

Still, I kept them engaged and entertained (teacher's have an excellent radar to tell whether it's true or not), and got some really nice complements from the other presenters, all of whom are climate scientists.

So that counts for something, right?

Got to hang out and chat quite a bit with Peter Griffith and Gavin Schmidt from NASA. (Gavin is the main force behind RealClimate.org, and the winner of the first “Climate Communicator of the Year” award at last year’s AGU conference.) Very fun and informative. I did apologize to them at the end, because I have an uncontrollable tendency to latch onto people with expertise in areas that I’ve built up questions about. So, I did kind of dominate a lot of the discussion with my questions. :-{

Cheers.
