View Full Version : [DVD-Project] Translation-effort for subtitles

Hi Folks,
I hope that - as a junior member - I'm not out of line to start a new thread! Here is my reasoning: with all the various intervowen threads about the DVD-Project, it somehow seemed to make sense to create a separate one for the upcoming translation-effort for the subtitles.
I'm moving my reply from the other thread (new website for... (http://www.manpollo.org/forums/showthread.php?t=34)) here:
We can use the wiki (http://klimaschutz.pbwiki.com/) Maiken and I moderate for this endeavor. The advantage of the Wiki is, that we could put the English texts in need of translation into a table directly on a page or multiple pages (not as an attachment). Whoever wants to help with the effort, only needs to get in touch with Maiken and myself via the Wiki's contact form and we'll set them up as contributors (*).
Doing this task as a collaborative effort in the wiki should speed up the process as it will easily be visible for everybody what still needs to be translated. We could also help each other out whenever we just can't think of a good translation.
I'm getting ahead of myself here, but we could also set up separate pages for different languages and/or one page per video. We would only need to know how best to split up the work before we can get actually started.
How does this sound?
Cheers
Baerbel

I like this idea Baerbel, sounds like a good way to get the translations done. If you set up the Wiki, I will prepare the subtitle files and start posting them as soon as I can.
Probably the best way to set this up would be to have one page per language per video with a main page connecting them all the indicating the status of the various translations. Something like this:
Videos
How It All Ends
English (complete)
German (complete, proofreading needed)
Spanish (in progress)
Chinese (Simplified) (in progress)
Chinese (Traditional) (needs translating)
Nature of Science
English (complete)
German (in progress)
Spanish (in progress)
Chinese (Simplified) (needs translating)
Chinese (Traditional) (needs translating)
And so on…
That will make it easiest to keep track of progress and it will be easier for me to import the subtitles when their are finished.

....
Hi Jeff,
glad that you like the idea! Could we perhaps somehow prototype it with perhaps 2 videos and languages to see how it will look like and if it makes sense?
I'm not 100% certain if we should immediately tackle languages like Chinese, though - not sure what the Wiki-editor would make of that! :D
In order to get edit access to the Wiki, could you please go to https://my.pbwiki.com/ and sign-up for a free pbwiki-identity with your email-address? Once you have your pbwiki-identity, use the contact-form at http://klimaschutz.pbwiki.com/contact.php to get in touch with Maiken and myself and we'll set you up with contributor-access for the given email-address.
Once we're satisfied that our approach works, I'll post some more information in this thread so that everybody who is interested in helping with this task can get set up as well and jump right in.
Makes sense?
Cheers

Sounds good. I am working on the subtitles for "How It All Ends" now, it should be done by the end of the day.

Hi Folks,
if you would like to help in a collaborative effort to get as many of Greg’s videos outfitted with subtitles in different languages, here is what to do:
Go to https://my.pbwiki.com/ and sign-up for a free pbwiki-identity with your email-address and name
Use the contact-form at http://klimaschutz.pbwiki.com/contact.php to get in touch with Maiken and myself, letting us know that you are signing up for the translation-effort and which language you’d like to tackle
We will trigger an automated email to the address you specified
Reply to that email and you are set up as a contributor to the wiki
We have set up an index-page (Manpollo - DVD-Subtitle-Translations (http://klimaschutz.pbwiki.com/Manpollo+-+DVD-Subtitle-Translations)) in this wiki where you can see which videos need translations into which languages. To start out with, our suggestion would be to do German and Spanish. If you’d like to tackle another language, please let us know and we’ll set up the pages accordingly.
Before you start with any translations, please make sure to read the Manpollo - DVD-Editing-Guideline (http://klimaschutz.pbwiki.com/Manpollo+-+DVD-Editing-Guidelines)s, which contain important information. If you'd like to see your name in the DVD-credits, add it to the Manpollo - DVD-Subtitles-Credits (http://klimaschutz.pbwiki.com/Manpollo+-+DVD-Subtitles-Credits).
Each translation-page contains a list with the English texts and you can simply overwrite this with your translations. Stuck with some translations? http://dict.leo.org/ might be able to help! Once you’ve translated several lines, please mark them in green to make it visible that these lines have been dealt with. Use red to mark lines/phrases where you need some help. Don’t forget to regularly save your changes!
Whenever you start translating the texts for another video, please change the status to “In Process” on the index-page. Once a language-page is completed, switch the setting to “Needs proofreading”.
The wiki makes sure that there cannot be any concurrent updates to the same page. If you try to edit a page somebody else is already editing you’ll get a warning message with the option to “steal lock”. To not cancel out somebody else’s work, please don’t use this link, but instead pick another translation page from the index. We are fairly certain that we won’t be running out of these too quickly!
If necessary – and to allow more people to tackle the same video/language at the same time – we can also split one list into separate parts, just let us know! One way to do that is to add a comment to the page. You can also use the comments to ask for specific help.
Doing these translations in the wiki will have the advantage that we only have one master list for translations as opposed to separate versions in many downloaded documents which will later need to be consolidated.
Please let us know if you have any questions or additional thoughts and ideas about this effort!
Thanks and Cheers

The website for distribution will be set up to handle English, German and Spanish (Cdn, USD and Euro's).
Didn't see a language package for Chinese.

Hi Folks,
after tackling the first two videos to translate the subtitles for "How It All Ends" and "God's Will" into German, I'd like to post some first impressions about the task and to again ask for help - lots of help!
Both videos together are just about 15 minutes long, but it took several hours to translate the subtitles into just one language. And, proofreading isn't yet done for them either. All told - if we plan to provide subtitles for all 6 hours of video-material - this is quite a monumental task.
Don't get me wrong, I don't plan to back out of this project, but doing it with just two people will take way toooo loooong!
In addition to the help with the actual translations, we'll also need a fresh set of eyes to do the proofreading for each of the videos. The translator and proofreader shouldn't be the same person. We have to somehow ensure, that the translations don't accidentally change Greg's statements.
As some of the videos come in several parts in their Youtube versions, it would perhaps also make sense to split the translations accordingly. That way, one page of translations wouldn't be too long and daunting when tackled! In addition, more than one person could work on the subtitles for the same video at the same time (just a different part) .
Please, revisit our "Call for help (http://www.manpollo.org/forums/showpost.php?p=370&postcount=5)" and sign-up for this effort!
Thanks and Cheers

Thanks much - After copying your work and then removing the numbers needed for subtitle tracking, I have a solid essay to pass along to my more paper bound friends. Hope to be a link to the less techy world of my peers. Looking forward to future English subtitles. aging tree

aging tree, the complete set of video-scripts is available for download on the Manpollo-site, so you don't need to use the subtitle-translation pages to get them:
http://manpollo.org/education/videos/video_scripts/video_scripts.html
Or, if you can't use the zip-file from the links above, you can download the pdf-version with all transcripts collected into one big document from the translation-index (http://klimaschutz.pbwiki.com/Manpollo%20-%20DVD-Subtitle-Translations).
Hope this helps!

Sorry about the ugly format below, but fairly frequently get people asking me if they can translate the videos into different languages, and I send them to this thread. So I thought I would be useful to re-post here a post giving some technical help in adding subtitles, originally posted in the "Welcome" forum, where no one will find it these days. If there's a better place for it, please feel free to move it.
Cheers!

Hi,
if you're into subtitling, you might want to check out some of the links below, these services basicly allow you to overlay subtitles over youtube videos etc. I haven't researched the links, but you might want to... I hope you don't mind!

Hi everyone, just to introduce myself as the-new-kid-on-the-block-having-volunteered-to-help-with-the-translation

Hi Folks,
I just finished translating "I hope I'm wrong" into German (http://klimaschutz.pbwiki.com/Manpollo-dvd-ihiw-de) and could use (at least) one second set of eyes to compare my translations to the original English (http://klimaschutz.pbwiki.com/Manpollo-dvd-ihiw-en) text.
The same goes for
"How It All Ends" in German (http://klimaschutz.pbwiki.com/Manpollo-dvd-hiae-de) and English (http://klimaschutz.pbwiki.com/Manpollo-dvd-hiae-en)
and
"God's Will" in German (http://klimaschutz.pbwiki.com/Manpollo-dvd-gw-de) and English (http://klimaschutz.pbwiki.com/Manpollo-dvd-gw-en).
You can send feedback either via forum-messages or by filling out the Wiki's contact form (http://klimaschutz.pbwiki.com/contact.php).
Thanks much and Cheers

Just a quick update:
We now have Javier working on Spanish translations and I'm going to set up pages for translations into Bulgarian which Ivo will tackle.
Bulgarian uses Cyrillic letters which the Wiki can handle. I take it that it wouldn't be an issue with DVD-subtitles either? Not sure if these will actually make it onto the first version of the DVD, but having them available cannot hurt and they can at least be used to print off and read along if needed.

Not sure if these will actually make it onto the first version of the DVD,
The first DVD will be the "original as seen on You Tube" version 1.00 with a release date of Feb 18th on rocketdocs.ca. It is mastered, runs ~7 hours and is English only with no subtitles. I just need to customize the website. Should launch on time or by Friday.
The first manpollo DVD release will contain the subtitles as you complete them. There is no release date set for that version. The DVD description (for the box and website) will need translation as well.

Nope, shouldn't be a problem at all—though I may have to purchase a Cyrillic version of Helvetica Neue.

Whew, what a week. I just finished writing the subtitles for the huge video "Risk Management". The whole thing ended up containing 1230 subtitles, or about 67,650 characters. Holy ****.
I have split it into three parts and posted them to the Wiki, enjoy:

Hello all. I joined recently so first I would like to introduce myself: I'm Leandro, from Mar del Plata, Argentina, and I'd like very much to participate by translating the subtitles to Spanish. Probably my main motivation is that with my sole exception, no one in my family understands English well enough for seeing this videos, and I would like them to know.
I have read the entire thread and followed the instructions, so I think this is all I can say for the moment.

Hey Everyone,
I have become swamped with work recently, and as such have been unable to work on any more subtitles since I posted up the files for "Risk Management". Based on how much work still need to be done on the english subtitles and my workload in the next couple of months, I don't think I am going to be able to finish them by myself. As such, anyone who would be willing to help me with the english versions of the subtitles would be greatly appreciated.
I will write up a tutorial about how to go about how to go about making the subtitles soon, but until then I just wanted to give everyone a heads up.
PS
Welcome to the team leandro_tami.

Hi Folks,
it has been quite a while since an update about the Subtitle-Translation effort has been posted, so I thought, I'd resurface this today!
The work is still continuing, albeit at a slower pace than we had hoped for. One reason for this is spelled out in Arbon's post from March, 13 (http://www.manpollo.org/forums/showthread.php?t=127) and his situation is still the same now as it was then.
Mind you, we are not yet running out of subtitles to translate from English into other languages - far from it as you can see on the Index-page for the subtitles in the Klimaschutz-Wiki (http://klimaschutz.pbwiki.com/Manpollo+-+DVD-Subtitle-Translations) !
Subtitles are currently being translated into these languages: German, Spanish, Bulgarian and Czech. Dutch and Finnish are about to get started. Apart from the actual translations, proofreading for each of these needs to happen and most of the videos also still need their English subtitles proofread. Doing the translations can be pretty timeconsuming, so the more folks help the better. Even if you can't commit much time, but would still like to help, you could for example tackle proofreading the English subtitles.
And before you ask: the Subtitle-translations obviously have a lower priority to get done than helping Greg with his book (http://www.manpollo.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=22)! I still decided to post this today to give those of you who feel that they cannot help as much as they'd like with that effort another opportunity to get actively involved.
So, if this is something you'd like to help with, read our "Call for help (http://klimaschutz.pbwiki.com/Manpollo%20-%20Translations%20-%20Call%20for%20help)" and get in touch as outlined there!
I'm looking forward to hearing from you :)

Hey folks,
Quick word to let you know I've sent out a request email on pbwiki to get the videos translated in French. I'm a native French living in the UK and while translation isn't my main profession, I think I have enough knowledge to be helpful there.
I've just finished watching "How it all ends" and the entirety of its expansion packs, and it's really eye-opening. Kudos to wanderingmind for sharing all that with us (yeah ok so I'm almost a year late... hopefully not *too* late...)
Cheers ;)
